Avalanche
About Avalanche
Avalanche (AVAX) is a Layer 1 smart contract platform launched in 2020 by Ava Labs. The network uses a consensus protocol family known as Avalanche consensus, which combines repeated random sampling among validators to achieve fast finality without requiring a single chain leader.
The platform is structured as three interoperating chains. The Exchange Chain (X-Chain) handles the creation and transfer of assets. The Contract Chain (C-Chain) is an EVM-compatible environment that supports smart contracts written for Ethereum tooling. The Platform Chain (P-Chain) coordinates validators and the launch of Subnets — independent custom blockchains that can define their own validator sets, virtual machines and rule sets while sharing Avalanche's underlying security model.
AVAX serves as the network's gas token, staking asset and unit for governance participation. Validators bond AVAX to produce blocks and earn rewards, with delegation available to holders who do not run their own infrastructure. Within the broader landscape, Avalanche sits among performance-oriented Layer 1 networks that combine EVM compatibility with customisable subnet architectures aimed at enterprise and application-specific deployments.
Why Avalanche Matters
EVM-compatible Layer 1 networks compete on throughput, finality and developer tooling while remaining accessible to applications already deployed on Ethereum. Avalanche sits within this category, distinguished by its tri-chain architecture and additional emphasis on application-specific subnets that can define their own validator sets and rules. Readers tracking how this segment evolves can explore broader trends across crypto and Web3.
