Anytype, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, has secured $13.4 million in funding to further develop its app that aims to empower sovereignty and cooperation at scale.

The investment round included notable backers Balderton Capital, Inflection, Square One, Script Capital, Protocol Labs, Connect Ventures, New Forge, and Foreword VC, as well as angel investors Trent McConnaghy, Jutta Steiner, Luis Cuendo, Adam Wiggins, Peter von Hardenberg, and Markus Ament.

The big idea:

  • Anytype is a productivity tool for note-taking, project management, and information organization, but with one fundamental difference to similar mainstream apps: everything a user creates and stores is end-to-end encrypted, local-first, and synced in their local p2p network
  • All Anytime data is protected with a seedphrase, meaning that users - not big tech or governments - get to decide how their data is used, shared, and valued
  • Anytime's decentralized architecture hopes to enable and support digital freedoms into no-code elegant tools that anyone can use
