About Cardano

Cardano (ADA) is an open-source, proof-of-stake Layer 1 blockchain platform launched in 2017 by Input Output Global, a research-driven engineering company. The network is named after sixteenth-century mathematician Gerolamo Cardano, while the ADA token takes its name from Ada Lovelace, often described as the first computer programmer.

Cardano uses Ouroboros, a peer-reviewed proof-of-stake consensus protocol developed through formal academic research. The network is split into two layers: a settlement layer for ADA transfers and a computation layer for smart contracts. Smart contracts are written using Plutus, a language built on Haskell, with the goal of supporting formal verification and predictable execution.

ADA holders can delegate stake to validators known as stake pool operators, earning rewards without giving up custody. The token also serves as the unit for transaction fees and protocol governance, with ongoing upgrades introducing community-driven decision-making over the treasury and parameter changes. Within the broader landscape, Cardano sits among proof-of-stake networks with an emphasis on academic rigour, formal methods and gradual, peer-reviewed protocol evolution.

Why Cardano Matters

Research-driven proof-of-stake networks emphasise peer-reviewed protocol design, formal verification and academic-grounded engineering processes over rapid iteration. Cardano sits within this category, distinguished by its layered architecture, the Plutus smart contract environment and gradual, structured upgrade cycles. Readers tracking how proof-of-stake networks compare across design philosophies can explore broader trends across crypto and Web3.
