Chainlink
About Chainlink
Chainlink (LINK) is a decentralised oracle network that connects smart contracts to off-chain data, computation and external systems. Smart contracts on most blockchains cannot natively access data outside their own chain, and Chainlink fills this gap by providing standardised, tamper-resistant feeds that applications can rely on for inputs such as asset prices, weather data, sports scores and proof of reserves.
The network is operated by independent node operators who source data, perform off-chain computation and deliver results onchain through Chainlink's oracle contracts. LINK is used to pay node operators and as collateral that can be slashed for misbehaviour. Multiple nodes typically respond to a given request and their answers are aggregated, reducing the risk that any single source can compromise an outcome.
Chainlink also operates the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), a messaging and token transfer standard that allows applications to send instructions and assets between blockchains. Within the broader landscape, Chainlink sits at the centre of crypto's middleware layer, providing the oracle and cross-chain infrastructure used across decentralised finance, tokenisation and enterprise integrations.
Why Chainlink Matters
Decentralised oracle and middleware networks connect smart contracts to external data, off-chain computation and other blockchains, sitting beneath the applications that end users interact with. Chainlink occupies a central position in this layer through its data feeds and cross-chain messaging protocols. Readers tracking how middleware infrastructure shapes onchain applications can explore broader trends across crypto and Web3.
