About Hedera

Hedera is a public distributed ledger network governed by a council of organizations from a range of industries, including technology, telecommunications, financial services and academia. The network uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm rather than a traditional blockchain data structure, ordering transactions through gossip-about-gossip and virtual voting to reach asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant agreement.

The protocol provides a set of native services that include cryptocurrency transfers, smart contracts compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, a consensus service that timestamps and orders application messages, and a token service for issuing fungible and non-fungible assets directly on the network without deploying contract code. Transaction finality is typically reached within a few seconds.

The native HBAR token underpins network economics. It is used to pay for transaction fees, smart contract execution and storage rent, and to stake to nodes that participate in consensus. A portion of fees is directed to node operators and to the Hedera treasury, with token release governed by the council.

Within the broader crypto landscape, Hedera occupies a distinct position as an enterprise-oriented public network with formal governance, contrasting with permissionless protocols where decisions are made through stake-weighted on-chain voting alone.

Why Hedera Matters

Public networks aimed at enterprise adoption combine open access with formal governance structures and predictable economics, often using consensus designs that prioritize finality and throughput. Native services for tokens, consensus and contracts reduce the integration burden for institutional users. For broader context on the digital asset landscape, explore trends across crypto and Web3.
