Optimism
About Optimism
Optimism (OP) is the governance token of the Optimism Collective, the organisation responsible for OP Mainnet — an Ethereum Layer 2 network that uses optimistic rollup technology to scale transaction throughput while inheriting the security of the Ethereum base layer. The network supports the same developer tooling and smart contract languages used on Ethereum, allowing applications to deploy with limited modification.
Optimistic rollups batch transactions offchain and post compressed data to Ethereum, with a fraud-proof window during which any participant can challenge an incorrect state transition. This model reduces fees substantially compared with executing the same activity directly on Ethereum, while preserving final settlement on the base layer.
Optimism is also the steward of the OP Stack, a modular open-source codebase that powers OP Mainnet and a network of related Layer 2 chains known as the Superchain. OP holders participate in protocol governance and the allocation of retroactive public goods funding, a mechanism that rewards contributors after their work has demonstrated value. Within the broader landscape, Optimism sits among Ethereum scaling solutions that combine technical infrastructure with governance experiments.
Why Optimism Matters
Ethereum Layer 2 networks scale transaction throughput while inheriting settlement security from the base chain, forming a core part of the rollup-centric scaling roadmap. Optimism sits within this category, alongside other rollups using optimistic and zero-knowledge proof systems. Readers tracking how scaling architectures evolve can explore broader trends across crypto and Web3.
