Some of the biggest venture capital funds in America are betting on something new: genetically modified military dogs.
What’s happening:
- Genetically modified war dog startup Warhound has come out of stealth and raised a $200M USD seed round
Why it matters:
- Warhound is co-founded by Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and Colossal founder Ben Lamm
Going deeper:
- Warhound is aiming to genetically modify Belgian Malinois and German Shepards to be used in military and combat situations
- Lux Capital, 8VC, Sequoia, Franklin Templeton and ARK all participated in Warhound’s seed round which valued the company at roughly $1.2B USD
- Colossal has publicly stated they will license their genetics and cloning technology to Warhound in exchange for an equity stake in the company
The intrigue:
- Warhound is planning to clone elite working dogs and will also attempt to gene-edit out inherited diseases such as muscle degeneration
The fine print:
- Palmer Luckey does not own any equity in Warhound and neither does Anduril
