Electric battery powered vehicles aren’t just limited to the roads. Now, they are headed for the mountains.

What’s happening:

  • Swedish based electric terrain vehicle startup Vidde has launched the world’s first electric snowmobile, known as the Alfa

Why it matters:

  • Transitioning vehicles to electric power is one of the most important trends in getting closer to net zero emissions globally, however most companies pursuing electrification have been focused on gas powered automobiles
  • The launch of the Alfa represents a potential paradigm shift in transitioning snowmobiles away from using fuel and instead being powered by battery technology

By the numbers:

  • The Alfa is capable of reaching a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour
  • For every kilometre traveled, the Alfa produces just 100 grams of carbon dioxide emissions
  • In total, the electric powered Alfa snowmobile emits approximately 85% less carbon dioxide than a fuel powered snowmobile

Going deeper:

  • The Alfa snowmobile was designed in collaboration with Italian car design company Pininfarina
  • Pininfarina works with many of the world’s most iconic car companies, including Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Maserati
  • Vidde has already landed multiple preorders for their Alfa snowmobile from some of the largest ski resorts in Europe
